Today, the Church celebrates Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio). He was an Italian Capuchin priest who became widely known for his deep prayer, love for the Eucharist, ministry of confession, and remarkable devotion to Christ. He died in 1968 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002. His life reminds us that "Enough is also a blessing." That a person can possess little materially and yet be profoundly rich spiritually.
The wisdom in the book of proverbs in the *First Reading* gives us a beautiful but unusual prayer, "Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that I need." The writer is asking God for enough.
Jesus makes the same point in the Gospel. He sends the Twelve out to preach, heal and proclaim the Kingdom, but He tells them not to carry excessive provisions. They are to travel with what is necessary and trust in God's providence.
Friends, we live in a world where we are constantly told that more is better, more money, a bigger house, a newer car, more recognition, more followers, more comfort. But Proverbs and the Gospel reminds us that there is a blessing in having what is sufficient.
Sometimes we are unhappy not because God has given us too little, but because we have convinced ourselves that what we have is never enough. We compare our lives with others and turn their blessings into the standard for our happiness.
A person has a modest car but becomes unhappy because someone has a newer one. Someone has a good phone but feels poor because another person has the latest model. We have a comfortable home but keep thinking about the bigger house someone else has.
Finally, sometimes God allows us to begin with little because He wants us to discover that little in His hands can be enough. So today, perhaps our prayer should not always be, "Lord, give me more." Sometimes it should be, "Lord, teach me to recognise the blessing in what I already have. Give me what I need, and give me the wisdom to know when enough is enough." Because enough is also a blessing.
May the life of Padre Pio inspire us to know that enough is also a blessing
