Jesus compares the Pharisees to whitewashed tombs: beautiful on the outside, but full of uncleanness within. This is the danger of religious hypocrisy, looking holy without allowing holiness to transform the heart.
We can attend Mass, pray, use religious language, wear religious symbols, and even serve in the Church, yet still harbour pride, jealousy, bitterness, dishonesty or hatred. We can be around the Church without allowing the Church to change us. We can hear the Gospel every day without allowing the Gospel to challenge us. We can receive the Eucharist without allowing Christ to transform our attitudes towards others.
The problem is not that we have weaknesses. We are all sinners. The problem is pretending that we are righteous while refusing to confront what is wrong within us.
St Paul reminds us in the First Reading that faith must become visible in our daily conduct. Christianity is not merely what we profess; it is how we live. So the question is not, "What do people think of me?" but, "What does God see when He looks into my heart?"
Our faith should affect how we work, how we speak, how we treat people, how we handle money, how we behave when nobody is watching, and how we respond when we are offended.
Religious hypocrisy is dangerous because it can make us look alive spiritually while we are dying within. Therefore, let us stop merely decorating the exterior and allow God to cleanse the heart
Beloved, God is not asking us to look holy; He is asking us to be holy. Do not merely whitewash the tomb. Let Christ cleanse what is inside.
