Imagine someone who is thirsty but refuses to drink clean water from a flowing stream. Instead, he keeps trying to collect water in a cracked bucket. No matter how much he pours into it, it always leaks out. That is the picture God gives us in today's first reading.
God says: "They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out broken cisterns that can hold no water." We often do the same. We know that God gives lasting peace, yet we keep looking elsewhere for happiness.
Our broken cisterns today may be:
Thinking that more money will solve every problem, chasing social media attention or people's approval, living in sin while expecting to enjoy inner peace, depending entirely on politicians, connections, or human strength while neglecting prayer or even looking for happiness in unhealthy relationships, alcohol, or other addictions.
None of these can satisfy the human heart because they were never meant to replace God. They may make us happy for a moment, but they leave us emptier than before.
In the Gospel, Jesus says that many people see but do not perceive, and hear but do not understand. The problem is not that God is silent; it is that our hearts are often too occupied with our "broken cisterns" to recognize His voice.
Today, ask yourself:
✓What do I run to first when I am worried, God or something else?
✓What occupies my heart more than prayer and my relationship with God?
✓What keeps disappointing me, yet I keep going back to it?
Every time we return to God in prayer, the Eucharist, and repentance, we leave the broken cistern behind and come back to the fountain of living water. Only God can satisfy the deepest thirst of the human heart. Everything else eventually runs dry.
