Homilies & Reflections

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

2026-07-18 - The danger of planning evil Author: Fr. Camillus Nwaigwe

18th of July 2026
Saturday in the Fifteenth Week of the Ordinary Time, Year II
Mic 2:1-5
Mt 12:14-21

One of the greatest tragedies in life is not merely committing evil, but planning it deliberately. The prophet Micah condemns those who lie awake at night devising ways to exploit the weak. Their sins are not accidental; they are calculated. They use their power and influence to dispossess others because they believe no one can stop them. God, however, declares that just as they planned evil against others, He will bring judgment upon them.

The Gospel presents another example of deliberate evil. After witnessing Jesus' miracles, the Pharisees do not repent. Instead, they meet together to plan how to destroy Him. Their hearts have become so hardened that goodness threatens them. Yet Jesus does not respond with hatred. He quietly withdraws and continues His mission of healing and saving lives.

This challenges us to examine not only our actions but also our intentions. Many sins begin in the mind long before they appear in our actions. Holding grudges, plotting revenge, planning to cheat, spread falsehoods, or damage another person's reputation are all forms of planning evil. God calls us to purify our thoughts because our actions usually follow what we repeatedly entertain in our hearts.

We are then call to:

✓Guard our thoughts, because today's hidden plan can become tomorrow's public sin.
✓Never use our position, wealth, or influence to take advantage of others.
✓When wronged, imitate Christ by choosing mercy and goodness instead of revenge.

May the Holy Spirit purify our hearts, so that we may plan what is good, pursue what is just, and become instruments of God's peace. Amen.

God bless you
