Homilies & Reflections

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

2026-04-10 - From Empty Nets to Overflowing Grace Author: Fr. Camillus Nwaigwe

There is a particular kind of frustration that comes from trying your best and still getting nothing. You work, you plan, you pray, and yet, the nets come up empty.
In the *Gospel* of today, the disciples experienced this. They were experienced fishermen. They went back to what they know best. They laboured all night. They did everything right. And still, nothing. Empty nets. And perhaps that was where many of us quietly live: Efforts that seem unproductive, Prayers that feel unanswered. Lives that look busy but feel barren. But the Gospel did not end with emptiness. It moved from empty nets to overflowing grace.

Friends, there was an honesty of that empty nets. That is, the disciples' failure was real. Jesus does not prevent it. Sometimes, God allows emptiness, not to punish us, but to prepare us. Because as long as we think we can succeed on our own, we may never truly rely on Him. Empty nets have a spiritual purpose: They humble us, they expose our limits, they create space for God.
Do not be afraid of seasons where nothing seems to work. God may be doing His deepest work there.

At dawn, Jesus appeared but they did not recognize Him. He gave a strange instruction, "Cast the net on the right side." It sounds unnecessary and Illogical even. They have fished all night. What difference would one side make? Yet they obeyed. And that changes everything. The breakthrough did not come from working harder, but from listening better. Many times, our lives remain stuck not because we are not trying, but because we are not listening.

The story of the disciples is our story, nights of effort, moments of failure, Seasons of emptiness. But Easter tells us, emptiness is not the end. If we listen, if we obey, if we trust, Christ will step into our ordinary lives and transform them. He will take our empty nets, and fill them with His grace.

Where in my life am I experiencing "empty nets"? Am I relying only on my effort, or listening to the voice of Christ? What simple instruction might God be asking me to obey today.
