Homilies & Reflections

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

2025-08-25 - Gods blessings to Naomi and her Daughter in Law Ruth Author: Fr. Francis Onwunali

The readings of this last day of the week highlight that true respect for God inclines us to humble ourselves and to submit to his wisdom and guidance. We cannot be taught by God unless we first learn to listen to his word and then obey his instruction.
The first reading (Ruth 2: 1-3, 8-11; 4: 13-17) recounts God's blessings to Naomi and her daughter in - law, Ruth. Naomi in her widowhood and Ruth in her childlessness  still believed and trusted in the Lord. God eventually blessed Ruth and her husband Boaz with a child whom they called Obed (servant of God), the father of Jesse, the father of David from whom the Messiah came to us. God blesses those who put their trust in Himself.
In the gospel (Matthew 23: 1 -12), Jesus addresses the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of His time; their actions were not in tandem with what they preached. Jesus also called His disciples to teach them privately and instrusted them to honour those in Authority.
Dear friends, power and authority are different: power is often propelled by selfishness, but authority, on the other hand, is service oriented. What is it that  moves you into action, and how do you respond when your authority is questioned?
I pray as we journey in life today, we will put all our trust in God, and "those who put their trust in the Lord are like mount Zion that cannot be shaken but endures forever" (Ps 125: 1). May we be more selfless and humble in our relationship with God and neighbour. Have a trust-full day!
