Homilies & Reflections

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

2025-08-22 - PUT ON YOUR WEDDING GARMENT Author: Fr. Camillus Nwaigwe

21st of August 2025
Thursday in the 20th Week of Ordinary Time, Year I
(St. Pope Pius X)
Judg 11:29-39
Mtt. 22:1-14

All the strength of Satan's reign is due to the easy going weakness of Catholics (St. Pope Pius X).

Today the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Pope Pius X (1835-1914). He was an Italian priest who served as the 258th Pope in the Church from1903 to 1914, and the tenth to choose Pius as his name. He took as his motto "To restore all things in Christ." He is known as the Pope of the Eucharist. His last will and testament bears the striking sentence "I was born poor, I have lived in poverty, and I wish to die poor."

There is this particular communion hymn that I love, "I cannot come to the banquet." Singing this song, I look at myself as one of those invited guests who turned down the invitation of the Master.
That song sums up the liturgy of today wherein we are invited to prepare and respond to God's invitation.

In the *Gospel*, we heard about the King who threw a wedding party for his son. The initial invited guests not only turned down the invitation, they mistreated those sent to invite them.

Beloved, everyday of our lives the Lord continues to invite us to a wedding banquet. We are reminded today of the magnanimity of God. Our God is gracious.

Unfortunately, some of us have rebuffed and turned down this invitation from God. In the parable of today, we heard how each went about his business. For them, their business of the day was more important than the wedding feast. Others mistreated the servants. So many times in our lives, we have made excuses and have refused to follow Christ. Some of us have made excuses why we won't change from a particular bad behavior maybe because our hearts are set on other things. The Lord calls on us today to make his invitation a priority.

The last and interesting part of the parable of today is that there are consequences for our actions. Everything we do or fail to do have their consequences.
It also reminds us that saying yes to God requires that we back it up with actions.
It requires putting on our wedding garments.

Every Blessings and may St. Pius pray for us
