Homilies & Reflections

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

2022-01-16 - GOD CARES FOR YOU. A reflection for the 2nd Sunday of the Ordinary Time, Year c. Author: Fr. Cammilus Nwaigwe

Readings: Isaiah 62:1-6; 1Cor. 12:4-11; John 2:1-11

Beloved friends in Christ, as I welcome us to today's Eucharistic celebration, I call on us to reflect with me on the care of God for His people. He loves and provides their needs.

In the first reading from the prophet Isaiah, we hear about God's care for Israel, Zion (Jerusalem). The background shows that after the exile, their condition got so bad. God assures them that He will not rest until He restores all their lost glories, loving them as a husband loves his wife.

The second reading presents God's care for his people which extended to His Church. He cares so much for His Church such that He gave it varieties of gift for its growth. These gifts are meant to signify and foster Oneness.

The gospel reading presents us with the second mystery of light; the wedding at Cana. Christ in this wedding performed the miracle of the wine, proving that He knows our needs even before we ask, just as Mary knew the needs of those who hosted the wedding even before they discovered it.

God will supply all your needs (Phil.4:19): In life, our wines can get finished or we can run out of wine at different points in time, how? It could be lack of the wine of love, confusion in the family, lack of money, children, presence of sickness, lack of knowledge etc. The Lord promises that He will supply them when we put our trust in Him.

Do whatever he tells you: One of the most important questions we ask ourselves today is, what is God telling me to do and through who?

1. To keep His commands and honour him as our Father (Deut. 32:5-7).

2. To avoid sin; ...not that his hands are short but sin...(Isaiah 59:1-2)

3. To live a holy life; Be holy in all you do...(1Pet. 1:15-16).

4. To do your own part well, leave the rest for God (Sirach 38:8-15). We are called to play our part well. As a trader; invest, as a student; study, as a sick patient; be clean and see the doctor, as an applicant; go out and look for job.

What is your response to the care of God: The Israelites forsook Him despite the care He gave to them. ''Those He begot has acted perversely... Is this the return you make to God foolish people, is He not your Father who made you on whom you subsist?'' (Deut. 32:5-7).

What about us, are we better?

What do we do then?

1. Invite Jesus and Mary into your life that they may renew you and give you a fresh wine. We should regard Jesus and His mother highly enough as to invite them. If we invite them, we will experience the Canan-like experience in our lives.

2. Gratitude and thanksgiving: We should be grateful and not ungrateful to God for all the graces He has bestowed upon us.

Like Mary, let us be friends who, learning of other people's vulnerable situation, take initiative to change it for the better.

May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Happy Sunday.
