FOR US A CHILD IS BORN. 2020 Christmas Reflection
By Fr. Francis Onwunali
Fri, 25 Dec 2020

A child is born for us, and a Son is given to us; His sceptre of power rests upon His shoulder, and His Name will be called Messenger of great counsel (Is. 9:5). Today we celebrate Christmas- the birth of Jesus, the Saviour of the world. THE WORD TOOK FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US (Jn. 1: 14).
In the first reading (Is 52: 7-10), Isaiah the prophet calls for rejoicing at the appearance of the One who bears this Good News because He brings with Him, peace, happiness and proclaims salvation, for God has taken our course upon Himself. "All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God".
In the gospel (John 1: 1-18), St. John the Apostle and Evangelist gives an account of the Word of God that is God and with God from the beginning. "All that came to be had life in Him and that life was the light of men...". This Word that took flesh is Jesus our Lord.
Dear friends, in Jesus as the Word, God makes Himself audible; in Jesus as the Light, God makes Himself visible; in Jesus as the Life, God makes Himself tangible and in Jesus as the Son, God makes Himself knowable. It is at this point that we begin to understand God as He has revealed Himself and begin to share in God's life. "...And in our own time, God has spoken to us through His Son" (Heb 1: 1-6).
I pray that as we celebrate Christmas today, we will in our actions appreciate this singular privilege of sharing in divine life by radiating love and brightening up other people's life. May the joy of the new born King fill us and enrich us to share and bring this joy to all around us. Have a Happy and Holy Christmas!
